Expanding horizons through collaboration

BSB sharing best practices in education

At The British School of Brussels (BSB), our commitment to delivering exceptional holistic education is reflected in our proactive approach to collaboration. This was exemplified by the recent visit of BSB Principal Melanie Warnes to The International School of Monaco (ISM), another leading institution ranked in the Spear’s Index top 10. Her visit opened avenues for both schools to share insights and best practices in crucial areas such as bilingual education, wellbeing, safeguarding, academic quality, and extracurricular activities.

Bilingual education

BSB has long valued the importance of language learning as a gateway to global citizenship. Bilingual education is a special feature of BSB’s curriculum, offering a comprehensive French-English programme from age four through to Secondary School.

This programme is designed to cultivate linguistic proficiency, cultural understanding, and a love for languages in a multicultural environment, equipping our students with the language skills needed to succeed in an interconnected world. With languages such as French and Dutch prominent in Belgium, we ensure our students are not only fluent in English but also proficient in a second language, enriching their cultural awareness and cognitive development. BSB’s bilingual programme empowers students to thrive in a globalised world, nurturing confident communicators who value diversity and inclusivity.

Melanie’s visit to ISM is another step in BSB’s quest to open up new avenues of dialogue and enhance our bilingual offerings further, while providing advice and guidance of our own to others – the main reason for Melanie’s invitation to Monaco.

Wellbeing and safeguarding

Student wellbeing and safeguarding are at the heart of everything we do. At BSB, we understand that a safe, supportive environment is essential for students to flourish both academically and personally. By holding meetings with staff at like-minded institutions such as ISM, BSB is exploring ways that we can continuously evolve our practices. Melanie’s visit facilitated discussions on innovative approaches to safeguarding and wellbeing that go beyond the classroom, offering enhanced support for mental health, fostering resilience, and further ensuring every child feels secure and valued within the BSB community.

Academic quality

Academic excellence is an important part of BSB’s reputation, and through collaboration with other international schools, we are continuously exploring ways that we can maintain and elevate our standards. Through the discussions with ISM, we shared methods for integrating rigorous academic challenges with student-centred learning, ensuring that each child can thrive. BSB is proud to be a school that nurtures curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity, guiding our students to success in national and international examinations and equipping them with the skills to excel in a dynamic, ever-changing world.

A future of partnership and growth

Melanie’s visit to ISM, an invitation based on BSB’s status as a top world school, also demonstrates BSB’s ongoing willingness to learn from and partner with other top performing schools. By doing so, we continue to refine and expand our best practices, ensuring our students receive an education that is not only academically rigorous but also supportive, enriching, and globally minded.

This collaboration is just one example of BSB’s broader commitment to continuous improvement and higher quality education. By collaborating closely with schools like ISM, we strengthen our ability to provide world-class opportunities for our students and ensure that they are prepared to thrive in both their academic and personal lives.
